FIRST Lego League (FLL) is an international robotics competition run by FIRST (For Inspiration & Recognition in Science and Technology) and affiliated with LEGO®. FIRST run competitions for children aged 5-18 years; FLL is aimed at children aged 8-13 years and uses the LEGO® EV3 Mindstorm robot. The FLL competition has four components to it:

  • Robot Performance
    • Teams build and program a robot to undertake a series of challenges to score as many points as possible in 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The robot must operate autonomously.
  • Robot Design Executive Summary (RDES)
    • Teams must give a 5 minutes presentation on their robot, gaming strategy and code, followed by a Q&A session.
  • Research Project
    • Teams undertake a research project based on the theme of that years competition. The teams come with a problem statement, they must undertake research, speak to experts, come up with solutions and evaluate their appropriateness. The teams then give a 5 minute presentation on the work they have done which is followed with a Q&A sessions.
  • Core Values
    • FLL has a set of core values; Discovery, Integration, Inclusion & Coopertition, that they want teams to develop and demonstrate. Teams undertake a supervised challenge to test how they work as a team; they then give a 5 minute presentation on what the core values mean to them and then have a Q&A session.

FIRST has a set of values by which they operate competitions, they are:

  • We are a team.
  • We do the work to find solutions with guidance from our coaches and mentors.
  • We know our coaches and mentors don’t have all the answers; we learn together.
  • We honor the spirit of friendly competition.
  • What we discover is more important than what we win.
  • We share our experiences with others.
  • We display Gracious Professionalism® and Coopertition® in everything we do.
  • We have FUN!
